Umani Ronchi - Masters of Marche
November 23, 2024
Hi there,
Umani Ronchi has been producing quality wines in Le Marche since the late 1950's.
Umani Ronchi and the region of Marche are known for producing spectacular Verdicchio but they also produce red wines that are of equal quality.
Montepulciano is the grape that is widely used, but it shows a softer quality than its neighbour to the south Abruzzo - where they are now producing white and red wines of excellent quality.
Mount Conero looks out onto the Adriatic from a stretch of coast that protrudes out from the shoreline’s smooth progression. The slopes that are around the Conero are home to the vineyards that the estate sets aside for red grapes, mainly Montepulciano, which goes by the name of Rosso Conero. Conditions here are special. The coast is near and the sea has a weather-mitigating effect. Temperatures are not so high and the soil calcareous. Here the grapes ripen well and from this tiny corner of the region of Marche.

2020 Cúmaro Riserva
Produced with 100% Montepulciano, Cumaro is one of the red gems from Umani Ronchi.
The vineyard from which Cùmaro originates is situated on the edge of the city of Osimo, facing south-east, at a height of about 150-200 meters above sea level.
After harvesting, it is aged in 225 litre oak barriques for a period of 12-14 months. After bottling, Cùmaro is left to age further for about 6-8 months.
On the palate the wine is has very soft tannins and a full finish. A great value for one of their top wines.
A chewy and firm red showing black cherries, nutmeg, cedar, coffee beans and orange peel on the nose. It’s full-bodied and compact, with a sturdy tannin frame.

2022 Verdicchio Vecchie Vigne Superiore
The vineyards are more than forty five years old. They are situated at about 250-300 meters above sea level, on a hillside facing east. The soil is very deep, clay loam, , and represents the ideal for a vine such as Verdicchio.
The ageing stage lasts about ten months, during which the wine remains in contact with its own yeasts in concrete tanks. Vecchie Vigne rests 6 months in bottle before being relased.
A tasty, minerally white with notes of biscuits, crushed stones, salted almonds and dried apples on the nose. It’s medium- to full-bodied, biscuity and complex, with plenty of texture and flavor.
