Jean-Marc Brocard Bougros Grand Cru
November 09, 2024
Situated near Auxerre in the valley of the Serein River, Chablis is one of France’s oldest wine regions. During the Jurassic era, 150 million years ago, the sea drew back from this region and left behind small sea sediments that turned into layers of fossilized stones and clay. These famous Kimméridgien and Portlandian limestone soils give Chablis wines their distinct salty, mineral flavours.
In 1973, Jean-Marc settled in Burgundy, where he built his winery and 1-hectare vineyard. He has since created a 120-hectare estate and produces over 30 unique single vineyard Chablis. In 1996, Jean-Marc’s son, Julien Brocard, joined the family business with a vision to turn the entire estate into a biodynamic and organic culture.
Just as they do in the vineyard, the Brocards also take a minimalist approach to winemaking in the cellar. Jean-Marc harvests and ferments each parcel separately and has eliminated any use of oak in order to reveal the true expression of terroir.

2022 Jean-Marc Brocard Bougros Grand Cru
Located at the leftmost West/Southwestern end of the Grands Crus, the Grand Cru Bougros shows great strength of character.
"A striking nose of oyster shell, spice, & ripe grapefruit plus a mandarin aroma. In the mouth there is obvious and fine minerality, wrapped up in a medium full bodied structure. There is wonderful fruit weight here, balanced by classic Bougros acidity. An energizing and very drinkable wine."

2022 Julien Brocard Les Preuses Grand Cru
It's rare to find a Chablis grower who farms biodynamically because of the climate. There are only a handful of producers who do so and are certified. Julien Brocard was one of the first to practice biodynamic farming in Chablis and today he is certified by Demeter.
The only Grand Cru in Julien Brocard's portfolio is Chablis Les Preuses. Located in the north of the AOC, this vineyard has a reputation for producing substantial and intense Chablis that tolerates long bottle aging well. The expansion of the Julien Brocard les Preuses takes place three quarters in concrete eggs and one quarter in wooden barrels.
Pale lemon colour. An impressive chiselled nose, very promising. Linear white fruit at first, with more weight behind, an interesting if unusual note of hyacinth, medium plus body, quite generous.
