Exploring Regional Gems from France
The gravelly soils and maritime climate of Bordeaux’s left bank are behind the region’s reputation for producing deeply structured and age-worthy reds. In contrast, the Ventoux region in the Rhône Valley, influenced by the cooler air from Mont Ventoux, produces wines with a distinct freshness and vibrancy not often seen in the southern Rhône. These characteristics are beautifully showcased in Château Coufran Haut-Médoc 2009 and Xavier Vignon Ventoux 2021, each offering a true expression of its region’s unique qualities.

Château Coufran Haut-Médoc 2009
The Château Coufran Haut-Médoc 2009 comes from Bordeaux’s left bank, a region famous for producing some of the world’s most sought-after wines. The term "left bank" refers to the vineyards on the left side of the Gironde River. What makes Château Coufran stand out is its blend—unlike most left bank wines, which predominantly feature Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is led by Merlot. The Merlot lends a rich, fruit-forward character, with flavours of ripe blackcurrant, plum, and subtle hints of tobacco and leather.
$43.95/btl - Available through LCBO Vintages.
Xavier Vignon Ventoux 2021
Xavier Vignon Ventoux 2021 offers something fresher and more vibrant from the southern Rhône Valley. The Ventoux region, which benefits from the cooling influence of Mont Ventoux, gives the grapes a chance to ripen slowly, preserving their natural acidity. This wine is made primarily from Grenache and Syrah, two key grapes in Rhône blends. It’s a lighter, fruitier wine than the Château Coufran, with flavours of bright red berries like raspberry and cherry, along with hints of herbs and spices.
$18.95/btl - Available through LCBO Vintages.
