90+ Point Large Format Wines Are Back in Time for the Holidays
November 30, 2024
Large format wines always make a great impression!
Wine ages better in a magnum—one and a half liters - than it does in a bottle. While there’s much more wine in a magnum, the amount of oxygen that gets trapped between the wine and the cork is about the same.
Less oxygen in a magnum means the wine oxidizes about one and a half to two times slower than in a regular bottle, thereby retaining more flavor and nuance. This actual pace of ageing is the best in order to preserve the balance in wine between freshness, acidity and fruit.
Besides - why not open a magnum for your dinner party??

NV Bellavista Alma Grand Cuvée
Composed of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir, this sparkling from the Lombardy area of Italy rivals champagne.
Made in the 'traditional method', the different parcels of wine are all vinified separately. 15% of the wines used in the blend are fermented and then matured for seven months in small oak barrels. These wines are then blended with the "reserve wines", . Once blended, the wine is bottled and the second fermentation takes place in bottle. It is then left to age on the lees for four years before release.
Pretty aromas of bread dough, lemon and cooked apple. Fresh. Medium to full body, tangy acidity and a fruity finish. Always an outstanding sparking.

2018 La Fiorita Brunello di Montalcino
First started by famed producer Roberto Cipresso, La Fiorita is now under the guidance of Natalie Oliveros. For the Brunello, the fruit is sourced from 4 distinctive vineyards in the resgion. The wine is then aged in the state of the art cellar for 3 years in large 'botte' then a year in bottle.
Strawberry, raspberry and cherry aromas and flavors are beautifully displayed in this charming version, with loam, tobacco and herbs adding detail while the aftertaste goes on and on. Shows balance and formidable length.

2018 Brancaia Il Blu
The flagship wine from Brancaia in Radda in Chianti. It is a blend of 80% Merlot and 10% each Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each single vineyard and variety are aged separately in barriques, two thirds new barrique and the other third second pass for 18 months. Afterwards, all the individual casks are tasted to select the final blend, which refines in uncoated concrete tanks for 3 months.
Beautiful aromas of currants and mushrooms with bark and flowers. Violets and chocolate, too. It’s full-bodied with firm, creamy tannins that are long and poised. It has such attractive tension and focus. Lovely sweet currants and berries at the finish. So succulent and intense.
